The story of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), a Renaissance man and a problematic and paradoxical hero both plantation and slave owner, author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States, The Founding Father, was a leading figure in America’s early development and during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83), Jefferson served in the Virginia legislature the Continental Congress and was governor of Virginia. He later served as U.S. minister to France and U.S. secretary of state and was vice president under John Adams (1735-1826).
Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, at 12:50 p.m. at age 83 at his Monticello home, on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
